First for those I haven't been in touch in a while, I took a trip in Europe in March with my friend Jon and met up with my other friend John who's stationed in Germany. I will write up the trip a bit more later but briefly we went to Prague, Berlin, Pisa, Florence, Rome, Naples, and Pompeii.
I know it sounds weird and almost criminal to drink BEER instead of vino in Italy. And I will be the first to confess that I always thought Italy is a wine country. But Jon and I were in Italy for 8 days so on our last night of the trip, we were craving some beer...saw a recommendation on my Lonely Planet called Bir and Fud in Trastevere (across the Tiber on the side most tourists won't venture out to)....and it's really a short walk from Campo di Fiori, just across the bridge, make a right off the small piazza across the bridge at Via Benedetta, 23. I know IPA is an American invention but Bir and Fud managed to have the most delicious microbrewed IPA I've ever had in my lifetime. And the bartenders were happy to let us sample a bunch of different beers that night, but I kept going back to the IPA.
Funny thing was, the owner must have felt that we can appreciate a good beer and he actually recommended us to go across the street to this hole in the wall place called Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fa'....loosely translated, Why Do You Bother to Come Here. So Jon and I went to dinner after our stop at Bir and Fud and visited the bar later that night, unfortunately we ate too much and can't enjoy as many beers as we'd like. It sure is a cool place to hang out and they have a great selection of beer.
We ran into this couple from Arizona and the guy told us apparently this bar was ranked the world's best beer bar in 2009. Who knew? He ordered this 26 year old sour beer that comes in a special basket. I later found out it's called Eylenbosch Gueuze 1984, while it was a cool experience to drink such an old beer, both Jon and I will say we wished we hadn't sampled it. All that food and beer + sour beer = terribly upset stomach and a long night before flying home. Nevertheless, it was cool to run into people who actually made the trip just to visit this bar, and meanwhile we just stumbled upon it serendipitously.
I guess the moral of this story is that when we travel, we need to just drop our preconceived notion of what each country should be like...this is my third time in Rome and it's only on this trip that I discovered Italy actually has great beer and bars. Don't get me wrong, the vino is great too, but it doesn't hurt to explore and diversify a little bit.
I'll try to post more stories from the trip later.
